He was taught by Sensei Terry Ford 2nd Dan. Through a lot of hard work Sensei Ford managed to mould a strong and dedicated student.

Thames Karate Association was part of the K U. G. B. and so David had access to some of the top instructors in Great Britain at the time. He used to regularly train with Gary Ford at Marshall Street under Sensei Enoeda 9th Dan and Sensei Tomita 6th Dan.

Dave Roe

In 1980 Sensei Terry Ford decided he was going to make a new life for himself in Spain. David, his top student, took over the club and has been running it ever since.

- He gained his 1st Dan in 1981
- His 2nd Dan in 1987
-3rd Dan in 1990
- and finally gained his 4th Dan in 1995.

As you can imagine Sensei Roe has trained with some of the best Karate-Ka people in the world.
Such as :

- Sensei Yahara Mikio 9th Dan
- Sensei Akihito Isaka 8th Dan
- Sensei Sumi yoshikazu 7th Dan
- Sensei Richard Amos 5th Dan
- Sensei Yohji Yamamoto 5th Dan
- Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa 9th Dan
- Sensei Aidan Trimble 5th Dan

David has also won many competitions in his time being a fighter 1st. The best result for him was in the 2000 J .K .A world championships he got silver into his division after many hard fights and also gained a bronze in the team division representing England. He has also trained with Master Kenneth Funakoshi from Hawaii, the great great grandson of master Funakoshi the originator of Shotokan Karate. He has also been lucky enough to meet and train with Chuck Norris in America.
David has recently decided that his roots still lie with K U. G.B and has had the pleasure of training under Sensei Bob Pointon 7th Dan and Sensei Terry O'Neill 6th Dan.

He continues to train and enjoys learn what he learns unselfishly passing on his knowledge to his students. One such student is Chris Barton, who now leads the junior section of the Thanet Shotokan Karate Club. He will eventually inherit the club. David knows that the club will be in safe hands as Chris has trained hard with David, to become one of his best students.

In David's everlasting search for Bushido, he has taken up two new martial arts and gained his 1st Dan in IADO and is looking to gain his 1st Dan in JODO at the end of next year.

Instructor Profile - Chris Barton

Chris Barton was born on the 29th May 1972 in the town of Margate. He attended the Hereson School for Boys in Ramsgate and went on to study design & technology at Canterbury College. After leaving college he tried his hand at many different jobs, and in 1989 finally found a job that he loved, working in worldwide freight forwarding and transport. Working for a few years for a variety of different companies until 1995, he then decided to venture out on his own. He now owns and runs his own freight forwarding business based in Ramsgate.

Chris Barton, Instructor for the Junior Section of Thanet Shotokan Karate Club

At the age of 12, and as many people do, he become fascinated by martial arts films starring people such as Steven Segal, Chuck Norris, David Carradine and the cliched Bruce Lee and wanted to know more. In 1984, at the age of 12, he started training in Traditional Shotokan Karate at the Thanet Judokwai under the instruction of sensei Dave Roe 4th dan, and since then has been hooked and has never looked back.

Although he enjoys every aspect of Traditional Shotokan Karate, he favours kata, and whilst in his twenties, he attended competitions across the country and managed to walk away with a variety of 1st place trophies and medals, including the ‘London Open’ for kata performance. In 1999, he was fortunate enough to be awared the prestigious grade of shodan by the JKA (Japan Karate Association).

In the 20 years between 1984 and 2004, he has had the opportunity to train and be associated with prestigious instructors from the JKA (Japan Karate Association) such as sensei’s Isaka, Ohta, Yahara, Amos, Sidoli, Lewis and more.

In 2002, in addition to the already popular adults (seniors) lessons at the Thanet Shotokan Karate Club, and due to demand, Chris is now the instructor for the junior sessions at the club.

Make my Day

<img style="BORDER-RIGHT: #000000 1px solid;
